Around age 39 I started feeling the effects of age-related loss of muscle and strength (sarcopenia). I met another mom who was already strength training and she recommended I read The Barbell Prescription by Jonathon Sullivan and Andy Baker. I had never used a barbell before so I hired a trainer to help me get started. Learning to use the barbell at age 39 was an unexpected journey, sometimes hard and sometimes hilarious but worth it. My decision to start training for strength has turned out to be one of the most important decisions I’ve made.
The strength I’ve gained has increased the quality of my life in ways I could not have imagined. Six months into my lifting I was able to compete at a local powerlifting meet and last year I competed at a National meet. It has been a gift to feel the satisfaction of being able to be an athlete at age 46.
Over the last several years I have continued to get stronger and enjoy the benefits of living in a strong body. I’ve also seen people in my life that are not strength training develop symptoms of age-related muscle loss such as back pain, shoulder pain and unwanted body composition change. I am passionate about how strength training has changed my life in so many positive ways and I want to share that with people who are ready to prioritize their health and life.
